Becky S. James is an Of Counsel attorney with Employer Advocates Group, where she concentrates on wage-hour class actions, PAGA actions, and internal workplace investigations.

A native of San Luis Obispo County, Ms. James is a highly accomplished attorney with extensive experience in both criminal and civil litigation. Admitted to practice in California, Texas, and numerous federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court, she focuses her practice on civil and criminal appeals, white-collar criminal defense, and civil litigation.

Ms. James is known for her extensive appellate experience, James has worked on hundreds of appeals and argued more than 50 civil and criminal appeals before federal and state appellate courts. She also frequently consults with trial teams and assists with complex motions in the trial courts. She is a Certified Appellate Specialist in California.

James was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Central District of California for nearly 13 years, where she served as Chief of the Criminal Appeals Section and Chief and Deputy Chief of the General Crimes Section. Entering private practice, James was a partner and co-chair of the national appellate practice at a major law firm before opening her own boutique law firm in Los Angeles.

James has served as a Ninth Circuit Lawyer Representative and a member of the Ninth Circuit Conference Executive Committee and has taught appellate advocacy and white-collar crime at Loyola and Pepperdine Law Schools. Among her honors, she was named one of California’s Top White Collar Attorneys 2021 by Daily Journal and has repeatedly been named a Super Lawyer.

James earned her J.D. at Stanford Law School and her A.B. from Stanford University. Following law school, she was a law clerk for Judge Pamela Rymer on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Ms. James’s many professional successes include securing a significant appellate victory in a published Ninth Circuit opinion, United States v. Pocklington, 792 F.3d 1036 (9th Cir. 2015), which vacated a judgment against her client Peter Pocklington, former owner of the Edmonton Oilers hockey team. She also represents Haymon Sports, a management firm whose clients include world-class fighters (including boxing champion Floyd Mayweather), to handle a Ninth Circuit appeal defending a summary judgment granted in their favor against an antitrust claim brought by Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.

Ms. James focuses her practice on white-collar criminal defense and civil and criminal appeals. She is certified by the California State Bar as an Appellate Specialist and is one of the few appellate practitioners with significant trial experience. She recently served as the appeals expert on the trial team representing Bill Cosby in his criminal retrial.

Ms. James previously spent over 12 years as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. During that time, she served as Chief of the Criminal Appeals Section, overseeing the Criminal Division’s approximately 500 appeals per year. She also served as the Chief and Deputy Chief of the General Crimes Section, training and supervising new attorneys in trial practice.

As a private practitioner, Ms. James successfully represented clients in civil and criminal investigations, trials, and appeals. Among her notable wins, Ms. James has achieved reversals of her clients' criminal convictions, acquittal at trial, dismissal of all charges before trial, probationary and other reduced sentences, release from civil contempt, full reversals in civil actions, and reversal in a published opinion in a significant civil rights case.

Ms. James has been an adjunct professor of appellate advocacy and white-collar crime and has taught trial advocacy and appellate advocacy at the Department of Justice National Advocacy Center. Ms. James served as a Ninth Circuit Lawyer Representative, serving as co-chair of the Central District of California delegation and as a member of the Ninth Circuit Conference Executive Committee. She has also served on the board of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles.

Ms. James is a member of the San Luis Obispo County Bar Association and the Orange County bar Association.
